India  ... Cyclone Phailin Hits

India has begun a relief operation after Cyclone Phailin made landfall forcing 1 million people to flee.
The cyclone wrecked many coastal homes, uprooted trees and blocked roads in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa states.
Five deaths have so far been linked to the cyclone, far fewer than were initially feared.
The Indian authorities were much better prepared than in previous cyclones and evacuated many hundreds and thousands of people inland.
A cyclone is the name given to a tropical storm that forms in the Indian Ocean. A tropical storm that forms in the North Atlantic is called a hurricane but they are both the same extreme weather event.
Cyclones take their energy from the sea so when they hit the land (called making landfall) they quickly lose energy and wind speeds drop.
